Course Overview:

This lecture will provide a comprehensive review of advanced orthodontic treatment considerations for adult and pediatric patients presenting with skeletal, dental, and airway-related concerns.

The first half of the course will focus on Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO), also known as Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy (SFOT) or Wilckodontics, with particular emphasis on its applications in orthodontics. This portion of the lecture will address its clinical indications, diagnostic considerations, treatment planning principles, and application in adult patients with dental and skeletal discrepancies involving both the maxilla and mandible.

The second half will examine the relationship between airway considerations and orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This section will include discussion of obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children, highlighting the important role dental professionals play in identifying potential risk factors, screening patients, and contributing to the interdisciplinary referral and diagnostic process. Clinical examples will be presented, including MARPE cases in adults and expansion cases in children, to demonstrate how airway, craniofacial growth, and skeletal development may inform orthodontic treatment decisions.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the clinical applications of periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics or surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy.

  • Identify indications for surgically facilitated orthodontic treatment in adult patients with dental or skeletal discrepancies.

  • Discuss how airway considerations influence orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.

  • Recognize key signs and risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children.

  • Explain the role of dental professionals in sleep apnea screening, referral, and interdisciplinary care.

  • Evaluate clinical applications of MARPE in adults and expansion therapy in children.

  • Apply case examples to improve treatment planning for complex orthodontic patients.

About the Speaker:
